They are a great person but….
“Bob” had been suffering with sciatic pain for over 3 years. (The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It travels from your lower back down into your toes. When irritated, it can create problems like pain or numbness/tingling in the legs.) If you can name it, Bob probably gave that treatment a try. Chiropractic, physical therapy, spinal decompression, massage, exercise…nothing had worked. But, Bob kept searching. He gave all of his previous treatment options 4-6 months and if it didn’t change his sciatica, he moved on. The NUCCA care he has received at our office has worked very well for him. He has been a patient for 2 months. We have seen him 8 times, and only adjusted him on 5 of those visits. Currently his sciatica is 90% improved and he no longer wears a back brace to work.
Bob has a sister with health concerns. Unfortunately, she has been in a vicious treatment cycle for over a year and a half. Bob told me his sister is reluctant to try a different treatment because her Chiropractor is a great person that she has known for quite some time, goes to her church, their kids go the same schools… etc.
I hear this comment quite often from listeners of our radio show. They are intrigued by NUCCA and want to know if it can help them too. However, they are reluctant to put their treatment on hold with their current chiropractor/friend. They have been seeing this same person 1-2 times a month for the past 2-15 years!
I feel that most chiropractic offices, just like any other business, are personality driven. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that bedside manner is an important part of the healing process. However, is that what you are ultimately paying for with your time and money? I tell all of my new patients that within 2 months they must:
AND
2) Must have improvement in measurements that are taken each visit. Their body must show it is responding and holding the adjustments for a period of time
Over the past year I have referred over 50 patients to a colleague of mine that specializes in sports injury and extremities. I don’t “lose” these patients. They realize that they need to get their upper cervical alignment checked periodically from me. At the same time they appreciate the help they get from another provider. I cannot be a master of all trades. If I value their health, and they need help in other areas outside of my expertise, it is my responsibility to refer them elsewhere.
If you are happy with your current level of health and choice in health care provider, wonderful! If not, don’t you owe it to yourself (and your family/friends) to seek a second opinion? After all, our health affects the lives of everyone around us.
